Close examination on the quadruple strokes roll
What I define quadruple strokes roll is generally called multiple strokes roll (multiple bounce roll) probably because it is implied that each stick can do more than three rebound strokes without trying to define an exact number of strokes. In order to define it a quadruple strokes roll I have deeply studied the matter and I realized that it is possible to roll with four strokes of rebound for each stick without trying to do more of them. The advantages are different: a more balanced and uniform roll, a precise beginning without flaws and discontinuity, the possibility of performing precise decompositions (the 64th notes can be easily performed). In brief:: - The quantity of strokes of rebound that a stick effects when it rolls is proportional to the available quantity of time; the smaller the fraction of available time is the fewer the possible strokes of rebound will be. - If you start with four strokes of rebound for each hand, the strokes will tend to be fewer and fewer as soon as you speed up. However you can succeed in getting a constant control of the quadruple rebound at the desired speed after a careful study. This example emphasizes the concept of basic rhythm on which the types of roll are overlapped in order to compare its effects:
Continue as it follows: - insert the metronome at 120 the quarter - play the quatrain that represents the basic rhythm of the hands - play the eight 32nd at double strokes - play the quatrain again - play the four triple strokes triplets - play the quatrain again - play the four quatrains of 64th at quadruple strokes. If you're not familiar with this technique, you can hardly perform the triple and quadruple strokes which need a long study. With these three differentiations you can have a roll of three qualities you can employ in a proper way. If you want to deepen study of the quarduple strokes roll, then study the XIth section of my book TECHNIQUE AND DYNAMICS. You can unload the mp3 file in which I perform: the triple strokes roll, the quadruple strokes roll, and the above example (basic rhythm and overlapping of the three types of roll) , Download triple strokes roll - quadruple strokes roll - e example If you have Black Wave Editor software I suggest you to open the program, then open the mp3 file about the quadruple strokes roll from the menu file, put it play and use the zoom so to see in a clear way the four tappings that should correspond to the four strokes.
